Catania international airport is the Italian airport, the biggest on Sicily island, located about 5 kilometers south of Catania city. It was named after Vincenzo Bellini, opera composer born in Catania. The airport history dates back to 1924. During the II World War, it was taken over by alliants and used as an army airport by United States Army Air Forces. Nowadays, it is the busiest airport on Sicily and the sixth busiest in Italy. Both regular and budget airlines operate here.
Annually the airport checks-in almost 7,1 million passengers. These are mainly European tourists interested in Etna volcano, at the foot of which lies Catania. The city can be also proud of high cliffs surrounding marvelous, long, sandy-pebbled beaches.
