Cascavel is a city and municipality in the Paraná state, situated in the southern part of Brazil. It is young and dynamically developing urban centre, in which space is dominated by modern buildings and interestingly designed squares and urban parks.
Originally areas of today’s city were inhabited by indigenous citizens of Brazil – Indians from Kaingang tribe. In 1557 Spanish started to colonize the region, setting up the first settlement – Ciudad del Guairá. Through centuries invaders were not showing interest in that area, but situation changed in the beginning of the 20th century, when the village was rented by José Silvio de Oliveira. thanks to his entrepreneurship, settler started to eagerly arrive at these terrains, and with them the number of investments began to grow. In the 30s many Polish, German and Italian immigrants migrated. On 14th November 1952 Cascavel became the independent city today it is a young and rapidly developing academic centre.
The city focuses on cultural development – regularly are organized film and music festivals, whereas museums of history (Museu Histórico de Cascavel Celso Sperança, Espaço Cultural Igreja do Lago), art (Museu de Arte de Cascavel), sound and image (Museu da Imagem e do Som) gather each year thousands of tourists. It is worth to visit also theatres – Teatro Municipal de Cascavel and Centro Cultural Gilberto Mayer. The city apart from rich cultural offer provides also spots for rest in the shadows of abundant vegetation, for instance situated by the lake Paulo Gorski Municipal Park is perfect for lying on blanker and chilling out while sipping water from coconut. Kids will certainly like the local ZOO. Visit also the cathedra Nossa Senhora Aparecida – worth attention are both original architecture, and pieces of art in Casa Dirceu Rosa.
Cuisine of the state Paraná is based on meat dishes. Make sure to try barreado, which is meat stewed in earthen pot, served with flour from manioc and bananas. It is also worth to look for an eatery serving dishes from special barbeque – churrasco de chão. The titbit are also snacks of first settlers, which is pratos tropeiros. Where to eat?
